About the show

This show and website is a celebration of the student cohort of the Bachelor of Design (Communication Design) at RMIT University, each student is represented by an image of the birds and fish of Melbourne.

It also recognises the unique relationship between the students and the City of Melbourne as many returned to the campus after two years of remote learning.

The city also holds a unique place in the minds of our offshore students separated from their colleagues by circumstances beyond their control but linked through the idea of a particular place.

The cinematographer Amit Roy says, A smart city means a city where humans, trees, birds and other creatures can grow in all their glories, imperfections, freedom and creativity.

By that definition Melbourne is a smart city. This work is a visual response to the glorious creatures of this unique environment; the birds in the air and the fish in the rivers, streams, and Port Phillip Bay.

The birds, who fill the spaces of the city with song, who steal chips, crap on heads, and generally fill the environment with a wild joi de vivre.

The fish, who gather in schools, catching the light, glinting like brilliant ideas waiting to be caught.

And just like the schools of fish and the flocks of birds, for the graduates of RMIT Communication Design, are now free because School is out and the Flock Is off!

About the program

The RMIT Communication Design degree is a three-year program of study offered in our city campus in Melbourne.

Our Communication Design students apply design methods to contextualise research and design strategies.

Outcomes are created that encompass publications, websites, apps, illustration, image-making, packaging, branding, strategic design, and service design that provide original user experiences. We’re extremely proud of our 2022 graduates and excited to present a small snapshot of their work here in partnership with the Metro Tunnel Creative Program.
